Why it is on my shelf
Written after the full manga, anime, and live-action films.
It almost kills me to even try to say anything about Rurouni Kenshin. It’s that remarkable to me. I have a tattoo of Himura Kenshin on my shoulder blade because he is genuinely one of my role models: the most elegant, refined, aloof, morally driven swordsman fantasy character I could ever ask for. The series is beautifully written, with a historical texture that helps you feel the transition from the Bakumatsu into the Meiji era. I’ve seen all the live-action films, watched the original anime, started the remake, and read the entire manga. It’s beautiful, bloody, challenging, and unforgettable. Kenshin lives in my heart daily as a reminder of what true heroes stand for, and how they face the darkness in the world around them and in their own minds.
Premise
Himura Kenshin was once a feared assassin in the final years of the Bakumatsu. Now he wanders Meiji-era Japan with a reversed-edge sword, trying to protect people without returning to the violence that made him famous.
